What Are Custom Orthotics?

A custom orthotic is a prescribed medical appliance used to optimize the body’s alignment throughout the gait cycle. They promote proper positioning and anatomical efficiency in order to reduce the stress and strain on the lower extremity, pelvis and spine as the body is in motion. They also aim at otherwise lead to injury. Custom orthotics help minimize your risk of injury by absorbing shock and decreasing unnecessary energy expenditure of the supporting structures in your lower limb. Chiropodists are one of the only regulated health care professionals, in Ontario, trained specifically to prescribe and dispense custom foot orthotics.

How are Custom Orthotics Made?

Custom orthotics are made from a 3D cast of your feet after your Chiropodist performs a full biomechanical assessment. The assessment involves an analysis of the placement and range of motion of your joints in static and dynamic positions. A full gait assessment will also be conducted to see how the alignment of your joints affects the way you walk. Asymmetry and abnormal joint motion will be observed as you progress through the gait cycle. All of these findings will help determine the type of orthotic correction that you will benefit from most. There are 2 main categories of custom orthotics: functional and accommodative. Functional orthotics are used to correct abnormal motion which may be leading to pain and injury. Functional orthotics are typically made out of semi-rigid material like plastic or carbon fiber. Accommodative orthotics are used to provide cushioning and to support painful joints. Accommodative orthotics are typically made from softer materials like thermocork and EVA.
